Bunion treatment

Learn about bunions and discuss conservative and surgical treatment options with Dr. Amy Richardson in Issaquah.

What’s a bunion?

A bunion, also known as hallux valgus, is a bony bump at the base of the big toe joint, on the inside of the foot. It can develop gradually as the big toe leans toward the second toe and the alignment of the joint changes.

As the deformity progresses, wearing shoes or walking may become painful. Inherited foot structure can contribute to bunions, while footwear and activities may worsen symptoms. Children can also develop bunions.

It’s also possible to develop a bunionette near the base of the little toe, on the outside of the foot.

Bunion treatment

Wider shoes with more room in the toe box may help relieve bunion pain. Depending on your symptoms and evaluation, treatment options may include:

  • Wider shoes.

  • Pads.

  • Anti-inflammatory medications for pain and to reduce swelling.

  • Custom-molded orthotics.

  • Surgery.

Dr. Richardson has more than 20 years of podiatric experience, including surgical care. An evaluation, and an X-ray when appropriate, can help assess a bunion and guide a conservative or surgical treatment plan. Contact the clinic to request an evaluation of your bunion or bunionette.
