Summer Foot Health - clinic journal

As the sun shines brighter and temperatures soar, it’s essential to pay extra attention to your feet during the summer months. Here are seven tips for keeping your feet happy and healthy:

  1. Choose Breathable Footwear: Opt for shoes made from breathable materials like mesh or canvas. Open-toe sandals or well-ventilated shoes help prevent moisture buildup and reduce the risk of fungal infections.

  2. Keep Feet Clean and Dry: Wash your feet with mild soap and water, and dry thoroughly, especially between the toes. Change damp socks and let shoes dry between uses. Antifungal medicines should not be used merely to freshen feet; ask a clinician about symptoms that may need treatment.

  3. Protect Against Sunburn: Apply broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to exposed skin, including the tops of your feet. Follow the product directions and reapply at least every two hours outdoors, and after swimming or sweating.

  4. Moisturize Dry Skin: Apply moisturizer to dry areas such as your heels, but not between your toes.

  5. Practice Proper Nail Care: Trim toenails straight across, avoid cutting them too short, and smooth rough edges with a nail file. Leave cuticles alone rather than cutting or pushing them back. See the American Academy of Dermatology’s nail-trimming guidance.

  6. Choose Supportive Shoes: Wear comfortable footwear suited to your activity. If you have foot pain, a podiatrist can evaluate whether orthotics would be appropriate.

  7. Stay Hydrated: Plan for water during summer activities and follow any fluid guidance or restrictions from your clinician.

Remember, your feet carry you through all your summer adventures, so give them the care they deserve!
